The incumbent will support the development and execution of communications strategy in support of Canadian Red Cross strategic and operational goals for domestic and international operations. With an emphasis on emergencies and media relations, the incumbent will provide communications support for domestic and international emergencies including response, recovery and resiliency initiatives.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and coordinate national communications plans in support of domestic and international emergencies
  • Inform strategy and develop content in English and French for internal and external audiences to further the positive reputation of the Canadian Red Cross.
  • Anticipate, mitigate and manage issues affecting the reputation of the organization, with various stakeholders including government, people accessing Red Cross services, internal/external clients, and the general public..
  • Act as the Communications lead during disaster responses and provide support for emergency response operations on-site or remotely for crisis management, content gathering, high level field visits, communications training, media relations as required.
  • Lead the development and execution of proactive strategies to drive positive traditional media coverage, as well as further brand interaction via digital and social media.
  • Build and maintain relationships with media.
  • Provide communications counsel, develop messaging and briefing packages, and prepare spokespeople for media interviews.
  • Support senior leadership in the management of issues, reputational risks and opportunities for the Society.

What we are looking for:

  • Minimum a university degree in communications, journalism or public relations with 6 to 8 years of job-related experience.
  • Fluency in French and English is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing organizational priorities through proactive government relations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with media relations including building and maintaining relationships with media, and development and execution of media campaigns
  • Experience in strategic communications, issues management and effective external media response.
  • Existing relationships with media in Atlantic Canada.
  • A valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle – a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract is required
  • Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interface with all levels of management, across multiple functions and departments.
  • Demonstrated culture competency, adaptability and strong presentation and communications skills.
  • Versatility in both tactical execution and strategy development.

Working conditions:

  • The majority of work is performed from a remote home office or from a CRC office as required.
  • Ability to work non-traditional and longer hours often on short notice especially during times of emergency response.
  • Ability to assume on-call duties on a periodic basis outside of business hours.
  • Occasional domestic travel may be required.
