As the DCMOH, you will assist the CMOH in monitoring and reporting on the health of Albertans, and play a critical role in advising on and supporting implementation of public health policy, standards and practices. With responsibility for specific public health files such as: Health Protection, Environmental Public Health, Population Health Assessment, Surveillance, Addictions and Mental Health, and Disease and Injury Prevention, etc., your role is vital to maintaining the capacity of the OCMOH to oversee and provide leadership for improved public health, and to delivering expert medical direction that supports policy development within the OCMOH and the department. Your focus is system wide as you collaborate with other ministries, Alberta Health Services and front-line public health providers in the provision of public health medical expertise. As an integral member of the OCMOH, you will share accountability for achieving government public health priorities.You will be relied upon to work with multiple stakeholders both internal and external to government such as other divisions within Alberta Health and other ministries within the Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services, and Indigenous Services Canada, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch. These roles are key in advising on the need for legislation, policies, standards and practices affecting the population’s health by providing public health leadership, medical expertise, clinical knowledge, and skill in evaluation to the department and other agencies.QualificationsYour medical career has revolved around a passion for public health and reflects ten (10) years of public health experience in leadership roles and an understanding of intervention strategies and disease control. You thrive in high-paced environments, understand the core functions of public health, legislation and legislative frameworks, and policy development, and are equipped with innovative thinking about the delivery of public health services. A consultative approach and ability to collaborate and build trusted relationships at all levels within your organization and with strategic partners is essential for success. A medical degree and license to practice, or eligibility to be licensed to practice medicine in Alberta, is required. A medical degree and certification in community medicine with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent in public health and a license to practice, or eligibility for a license to practice as a specialist in Community Medicine/Public Health and Preventive Medicine, is required.Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
